How cleantech fits into Middle East, N. Africa desal needs

November 3rd, 2009 by www.carbonfreeenergy.cn
Energy recovery technologies, including nuclear and solar energy based desalination, are expected to offer solutions for the growing market.

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) need to add about 2.7 million cubic meters per day of desalination capacity each year to meet the region’s growing demand for water, with clean technologies holding the potential to help address those requirements.

The market for desalination plants in the region is expected to attract investments to the tune of $15.5 billion between 2009 and 2013, Frost & Sullivan Senior Research Analyst Vivek Gautam told the Cleantech Group today.

Gautam, who recently produced a report on the topic, said the market brought in $3.8 billion in revenue for 2008, with nearly 19 percent of that from small capacity plants.

The report also suggests reverse osmosis technologies are likely to be a bigger part of the growing market.

Gautam said demand is being primarily driven by chronic water shortages because of persistent drought-like conditions, increasing populations, and increasing per capita water consumption because of improving living standards and expanding industrial activity. There’s little available fresh water in the region, Gautam said.

“It’s really a hot bed of activity. Since they have no natural water supply, they have to inherently have desalination capacity,” said Topsfield, Mass.-based International Desalination Association President Lisa Henthorne, who lived in Dubai for the last five years.

The growing desalination market offers immediate potential for energy recovery technologies, Gautam said.

“In the short run, we may expect some market for nuclear energy-based desalination, as it is most competitive compared to other non-conventional energy resources,” he said. “Similarly, we may expect some opportunities for solar energy-based desalination, particularly for small capacity plants using brackish water as feed.”

He cited desalination coupled with solar power as potentially being the most promising in the long term.

Desalination is considered an energy intensive process, but Gautam said few alternative reliable water supply options are available in water scarce MENA region countries.

Henthorne highlighted the potential for membrane technologies, which she said are already making great strides in MENA because they are energy efficient, and waste energy can be recovered from the process.

Gautam said nano-engineered membranes look promising.

“If these membranes are proven to be low fouling, this can represent a breakthrough in membrane design,” he said.

Henthorne said the market opportunity in MENA presents opportunities for cleantech companies, related to continuing to reduce desalination energy consumption and develop innovative new technologies that use natural sources of energy, such as direct osmosis, which uses more natural ability of the saline solution to remove salt.

Other selective approaches are focused on removing specific ions or increasing the amount of water that can go through a membrane, she said.

Gautam said some of the main suppliers of energy recovery technology include California-based Energy Recovery Systems (Nasdaq:ERII) and Switzerland’s Calder. And Norway-based Aqualyng has proprietary energy recovery technology that’s integrated with a plant’s design. These devices have substantially reduced the energy intensity of reverse osmosis-based desalination, thereby reducing the production cost of desalinated water, Gautam said.

Earlier this month, Energy Recovery said its energy efficient technology is expected to be implemented at the Southern Seawater Desalination Plant in western Australia (see Energy Recovery tech slated for new Australian desal plant).

Henthorne said because of global warming the rain patterns have changed in Australia, leading to changes in the water and air currents.

“They have, in a matter of a few years, gone from a drought to recognizing this is not going to change,” Henthorne said.

She said environmentally friendly desalination plants have been springing up through Australia, often powered completely by renewable energy.

Other companies Gautam said are working toward coupling renewable energy with desalination include South Korea’s Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction, which is pairing a desalination plant with fuel cell and wind energy.

Doosan and Korea Electric Power are working on a Multiple Effect Distillation (MED)-based desalination plant integrated with a small nuclear plant to produce 40,000 cubed meters per day of water and 90 megawatts of power, at low cost compared to gas turbines. Commercialization of this technology is in progress, Gautam said.

Last week, Canonsburg, Pa.-based Aquatech International was picked to design and build a seawater desalination project for a thermal power plant in Egypt, to include two MED units. MED technology allows for uninterrupted water supply (see Desal project at Egyptian thermal power plant goes to Aquatech).

The Vertical Axis Wind-Power Turbine ( VAWT ) is a new product designed . We started the research on VAWT 15 years ago. Now many of the famous experts the world wide have accepted such new technology and this technology will definitely lead the development of the small and middle size wind-power turbines. Following are the detail features of such VAWT:
Safe in operation:
Due to the usage of the vertical blade and the force support is of triangle form, the wind force will mainly press on the wheel. So the blades will not be able to fall
down, to be broken or to be thrown far away.
Noise:
The way of the turning of the blades is of horizontal and the design of the blade is of the scheme of the wing of the air-plane, so in operation the VAWT will not make any noise.
Capacity of wind resistance:
Due to the advantage of the design of the VAWT, the press force the turbine suffered is minimized and as the result such VAWT can stand on the extra strong typhoon of 45 m/s.
Space requirement:
It needs much smaller working space than other kinds of wind-power turbines. Thus not only saves the space, but also aises the working efficiency.
Power curve:
It needs lower wind speed for its starting and the increasing of the power is slow and stable. So its production capacity is 10-30% higher than other kinds of turbines.
Scope of the wind power needed:
Due to the adoption of the new control system, this VAWT is suitable to be used in the wind speed scope from 2.0 25 m/s.. It means we can get full use of the wind source

and producing more power economically.
Brake system:
This VAWT is equipped with both the automatic brake system and the handle brake system. The handle brake system can meet the needs to brake the equipment in the area where there is no typhoon and the extra strong wind.
Maintenance:
The turbine of the VAWT is of direct driven permanent magnetic system, without using the gear box.

WaveRoller Uses Swinging Door for Underwater Wave Energy

November 3rd, 2009 by www.carbonfreeenergy.cn

The simplest ideas are best at harnessing underwater wave energy. You don’t want lots of parts in the harsh marine environment (for machine parts) under the ocean. Here’s an idea from a diver from Finland who was almost hit in the head by a shipwreck door that inspired this invention: the WaveRoller.

Now the EU is funding the diver; Rauno Koivusaari, with $4.4 million for his company AW-Energy to build the first full scale demo of his invention.

Each one at full size weighs 20 tons and produces 300 KW.

Each 20 ton WaveRoller “door” can be connected together in threes to make up a nearly 1 MW unit. Obviously you can make a modular farm of any size under the ocean of these three-packed units, so the output can be as much as you can build tons-worth of “doors”.

Koivusaari’s company AW-Energy has been perfecting the device for the last fifteen years. His half scale demos have gone well. This year we will get the results of a full scale demo built off the coast of Portugal, thanks to the EU funding.

AW-Energy’s WaveRoller uses the roiling currents under the sea to make energy from the repetitive surge motion at the sea floor in what Koivusaari calls the surge zone. The kinetic energy produced is collected by a piston pump. This energy can be converted to electricity by a closed hydraulic system in combination with a hydraulic motor/generator system.

It would be positioned on the sea-floor 21 feet to 75 feet below sea level so ships won’t interfere with it. Since it is out of sight; it is a Nimby-proof source of renewable energy.

Trony Solar’s IPO filing could bring in $200M

November 2nd, 2009 by www.carbonfreeenergy.cn
Intel Capital-backed Chinese thin film company plans to trade on the NYSE under the ticker symbol TRO, following STR Holdings.

Shenzhen, China-based Trony Solar Holdings is looking to raise up to $200 million in an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange, according to a regulatory filing today. It would trade under the ticker symbol TRO.

The thin film solar company, which has roots in producing thin film batteries, uses amorphous silicon technology to deposit non-crystalline silicon onto a substrate to manufacture solar photovoltaic modules that it says are thinner than conventional crystalline solar PV modules.

Its products include large modules with applications in PV power stations, building integrated photovoltaics and off-grid. Trony had a 115 megawatt annual manufacturing capacity as of the end of August.

It didn’t list the number of shares it plans to offer or the price range. Founded in 2003, the company has more than 600 employees.

Last year, Trony Solar raised $20 million from Intel Capital, the investment arm of Santa Clara, Calif.-based chipmaker Intel (Nasdaq:INTC) (see Intel puts more cash into cleantech). Some of the funding was expected to be used on Trony’s expansion plans.

Earlier this month, Enfield, Conn.-based STR Holdings said it was also planning to go public on the NYSE during the week of Nov. 2, which would mark the first U.S.-listed IPO from a solar company in more than a year. It is looking to raise $172 million by offering 12.3 million shares at a price range of between $13 and $15 per share (see Second time’s a charm for STR Holdings’ IPO?).

Friday Factoids: Climate Bills vs. Expert Consensus on R&D

November 2nd, 2009 by www.carbonfreeenergy.cn
Originally from the Breakthrough Institute Friday again already eh? Well that makes it Friday Factoids time … We’ll keep this one short, with just the graphic below comparing the levels of clean energy R&D funding included in the House and Senate climate and energy bills with the strong and growing consensus among energy innovation experts that $15 billion per year in additional funding is needed to achieve national climate, energy and economic objectives. I’ve also included the boost in FY2009 Department of Energy (DOE) R&D budgets provided by the economic stimulus bill, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. As Google’s Dan Reicher warned the Senate on Wednesday: when these temporary stimulus funds dry up, the U.S. could fall of a “funding cliff” unless significantly larger allocations are made for clean energy R&D in Congressional legislation. ( click to enlarge ) Sources: ACES and CEJAPA funding levels are average annual figures over the first ten years of cap and trade (2012-2021) at EPA-projected allowance prices. Chinese Manufacturer First to Export Wind to U.S.

November 2nd, 2009 by www.carbonfreeenergy.cn

A-Power Energy Generation Systems won one aspect of the clean energy race and made history, as it will become the first Chinese manufacturer to export wind turbines to the United States. A-Power Energy Generation Systems and a consortium of Chinese and American companies — U.S. Renewable Energy Group, Cielo Wind Power, and the Shenyang Power Group — are planning to build a 600-megawatt wind farm in West Texas.

The project, which could power as many as 180,000 homes, will require 240 2.5-megawatt turbines and the farm will occupy 36,000 acres of land in West Texas. Nearly shovel ready, the construction effort is projected to create about 30 permanent jobs and 300 temporary ones. Ground-breaking on the wind farm is slated for March of 2010.

Financing will largely be sourced from Chinese banks with the U.S. government contributing loan guarantees and cash grants. In total, the wind farm is estimated to cost $1.5 billion.

The landmark export deal could signify a significant step forward for the Chinese, who are actively looking to lead the world in clean energy technology innovation. While the success of the wind farm project is an enormous factor, this could be the start of a trend for the Chinese who stand to gain significant economic benefits if they continue to be the go-to turbine manufacturer for U.S. wind projects.

Northeast Adds 17 Gigawatts of Renewable Power to Meet RPS

November 2nd, 2009 by www.carbonfreeenergy.cn

Renewable energy comprised more than half the energy added this year to the Northeast grid, comprising part of Canada and 6 US states. 17 GW of renewable energy projects in the region will be completed in the next five years.

It is no coincidence that each of these states has a state renewable portfolio standard which requires utilities to add an increasing percent of renewable power to the grid each year. New York’s RPS requires 24% by 2013, Maine:40% by 2017(met), Vermont:20% by 2017, New Hampshire:16% by 2025, Rhode Island:16% by 2019, and Connecticut:27% by 2020 )

The Renewable Portfolio Standard is a sure way to get more homegrown climate-friendly renewable power on the grid and is up for votes yet again this year (in the American Clean Jobs & American Power Act) after multiple previous attempts to pass it.

Nano carbon Graphene is already being produced in decidedly non-nano quantities by Ohio-based Angstron. Yet the atom-thick nano-material was discovered so recently that researchers are still in the process of discovering what to use it for.

Graphene is an extremely low density material, almost an atomic-scale chicken wire made of carbon atoms and their bonds. It has been the focus of much research because of its exceptional electrical, mechanical and optical properties. It holds great promise in renewable energies.

Among the so far underutilized advantages Graphene offers are that it is fifty times stronger than steel, and it has five times the conductivity of copper, with only one quarter of the density.

Desal project at Egyptian thermal power plant goes to Aquatech

November 2nd, 2009 by www.carbonfreeenergy.cn
Following wins for desal tech in India and wastewater reuse in Egypt, U.S.-based OEM takes on a new Mediterranean Sea facility.

Canonsburg, Penn.-based Aquatech International said it’s been picked to design and build a special seawater desalination project for a thermal power plant in Egypt.

Financial details of the project for the client, West Delta Electricity Production, and consultant PGESCo were undisclosed. The project is expected to use Multiple Effect Distillation (MED) technology, which allows for uninterrupted water supply.

The new facility at Abu Qir, a village on the Mediterranean coast northeast of Alexandria, is planned to include two MED units with thermal vapor compression technology. Each is expected to have the capacity to generate a net of 5,000 cubed meters of water per day and supply 10,000 cubed meters of fresh water a day to the power station.

The plant is to use Mediterranean Sea water to produce pure water with less than 5 milligrams per liter total dissolved solids, and is to use plant steam to provide energy to operate the desal units.

Aquatech is an original equipment manufacturer of industrial water and wastewater treatment systems, and a supplier of water management services. Its water purification technology focuses on desalination, water reuse, and zero liquid discharge. It has a worldwide presence through subsidiaries in Europe, the Middle East, India, and China.

In June, the company won a contract to design, build and operate one of the largest desalination plants in India (see Aquatech wins seawater desal project in India). Aquatech plans to pre-treat the seawater using lamella clarifiers and a two-stage pressure filtration. Then, four streams of seawater reverse osmosis banks are followed by two banks of brackish water reverse osmosis.

Earlier this year, Aquatech was also awarded an industrial wastewater reuse project that uses reverse osmosis for a chemical facility by TCI Sanmar Chemicals, also in Egypt. The system is expected to have a capacity of 8,500 cubed meters per day, recovering more than 90 percent of the water suitable for use within the facility for various processes.

Modified Hybrids to be Tested

November 2nd, 2009 by www.carbonfreeenergy.cn

Modified Hybrid CSIRO is an Australian research organization. CSIRO is working in collaboration with Victorian energy distributor SP AusNet. They both are aiming to evaluate the impact and benefits of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles on the electricity network. They are also trying to figure out how this low emission transport option could be incorporated into our homes and cities in the future. They are opting out for a three-month trial of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The staff of the energy distributor SP AusNet will use a modified PHEV for their daily commute and other leisurely journeys.

Phillip Paevere, the CSIRO Energy Transformed Flagship scientist, is sharing his views, “When not needed, the parked car in the driveway could potentially become a large battery store and energy source for the house, running appliances or storing off-peak or surplus electricity generated from on-site renewable generators, such as solar panels.”

CSIRO engineers have modified these vehicles so that they can carry a 30Ah NiMH battery and also a battery charger. The battery charger will allow the vehicle to be charged up directly from the grid or on-site renewables. These adaptations will also enable the researcher to find out how PHEVs could be used as a ‘mobile battery.’ This mobile battery can be integrated and used at home. The same study trial will also examine the probable impact of extensive use of PHEVs on electricity demand and the network.

So the next three months for the staff from Victorian energy distributor SP AusNet are quite crucial. Dr Phillip Paevere tries to explain the process of working, “The PHEVs have been fitted with instruments which will monitor the travel patterns of different users, and the residual battery power left in the car at the end of the day, which could be available for other uses.”

SP AusNet spokesperson, Sean Sampson shed some light on the study trial. According to him this project will also permit a thorough analysis of what the electricity demands are likely to be when PHEVs are connected to the network for charging. As per Mr. Sampson, “The introduction of electric vehicles into the mainstream market could have a significant impact on the electricity network. They may also dramatically affect the output at residential and retail outlets and the forecasted growth of peak and base demands.”

It has to be noted that the transport sector of Australia contributes for 14 per cent of total greenhouse gas emissions. Naturally, PHEVs will be helpful in lessening these harmful emissions. They will also assist in finding an alternative method to meet peak demand on the electricity grid. How? The answer is simple. By managing and monitoring when PHEVs are recharging from the electricity network, the burden of demand can be shifted.

Additionally, the car battery can be utilized to supply power during peak periods of demand. This will help in dealing with blackouts when there is a network supply interruption. Hopefully all these logical steps will lead towards maintaining the overall stability of the network.

The study, evaluation and analysis of the road trial would be the first phase in understanding the potential for using PHEVs in Australian homes. The PHEV technology will also be used in the home energy system of CSIRO’s Zero Emission House (AusZEH) project.
